Meet our PA and legal assistant Claire, who joined Grey Smith Legal in May 2021. Claire is a highly experienced legal PA and has worked in the industry for more than 25 years.

What made you want to work in the legal industry?

I have had a passion for law since secondary school and always wanted to work in a legal environment.

Can you give us a brief overview of your career history?

I finished college after undertaking a two-year medical secretary course, but after gaining my diploma, I realised it wasn’t for me and pursued my career in law. I first worked as a PA and secretary for Richard J Knaggs, in Redcar, where I worked for around six years.

I was then approached by Askews and went on to work for the head of the family department and supported the private law team for 10 years.

Then I moved to Cygnet Law, where I worked for the head of the family department, as well as the PA for the managing director, Peter Medd, and as a paralegal for the head of the private family law team.

I joined Grey-Smith Legal in May 2021 and truly believe it was one of the best career choices I have ever made.

What do you enjoy most about your job role?

I love the diversity that it brings. I also enjoy engaging and supporting clients on their conveyancing journey. My role is challenging, diverse and rewarding and I feel lucky to work with such an amazing team.

What does a typical working day include for you?

It’s very varied and includes everything from attending to enquiries and dealing with clients to preparing legal documents and completion statements. I also help to review ongoing cases and make relevant enquiries, as well as engaging with external professionals and the daily maintenance and upkeep of files and general bookkeeping.

I also assist Dale (Smith, operations director) with collating weekly planners for all managers across all the companies owned by SDDE, including providing additional support when necessary in relation to residential and freehold tenants, debt management and general administration.

What do you enjoy most about working at Grey-Smith Legal?

The mutual respect we all have for each other. We have a really close team who are all really passionate about our work and really love what we do as a team and as individuals. I really couldn’t wish to work with a nicer group.

What would you say to anyone considering working in the legal industry?

If it is something you are really passionate about then you should follow your dreams. There are so many different areas of law to explore – I find the job very diverse and rewarding.

What is your proudest moment?

I prepared our applications for both the British Conveyancing Awards and the North East Insider Awards which are some of the most prestigious awards in the UK. We were shortlisted for both which makes me feel incredibly proud.

Another proud moment was spending time in Leeds learning to be a Visualfiles developer, before going on to assist in the design and creation of a case management system for Askews and training the team in it. I believe the firm still uses this system to run their case files.

Most important lesson you have learned in your working life:

To always have boundaries and to keep a positive and realistic work life balance for the benefit of mental health and wellbeing.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

A vet!

What do you do to relax?

I love to walk, meet friends, go to a spa or enjoy a weekend break in the countryside.

What’s your hot drink of choice and how do you have it?

A latte, no sugar, extra hot!

Describe yourself in 3 words:

Independent, positive attitude, fun.
